Move of the Week for the week of March 31, 1997
Face your opponent in a fighting stance (in this case, your left leg forward to his right leg forward) As your opponent slides or lunges forward with a right leg side kick, lunge forward and left, deflecting the kick with a right hand low defense (your left hand is available to deflect any hand techniques). Wrap your right arm under your opponent's right leg and grab his right shoulder with your left hand.
Sweep forward on your opponent's left leg (calf) while pulling back on his right shoulder. Continue the takedown, maintaining control of your opponent (including his right arm and leg).
Strike with a reverse punch to the face. Jump back and remain ready because your opponent may try to kick you as you pull away.

Lateral movement can be very important when your opponent is always driving straight in. This technique lets you practice the timing required for such lateral moves. A quick takedown is essential, and can give you a great psychological advantage in the fight. Standing there holding his leg for too long can just get you into trouble. Also, be sure to always sweep straight forward (in reference to the position of his leg, not yours) on your opponent's leg. Not only will it be more effective, but it will reduce the chances of damaging your partner's knee.
